KUAF Summer Jazz Concert Series Celebrates 11th Anniversary

The North Arkansas Jazz Society and University of Arkansas Music Department kick off their 11th season of the KUAF Summer Jazz Concert Series on Friday, June 26th at 7:00 PM at Teatro Scarpino in Fayetteville. This season showcases internationally acclaimed jazz musicians and our house rhythm section, pianist Claudia Burson, bassist James Greeson and drummer Darren Novotny.

Saturday, July 11th at 8:00 PM - UofA Union Theatre on the UofA campus, Fayetteville.
Bobby Watson returns to Northwest Arkansas. His band Horizon has appeared at the Walton Arts Center and at a previous Summer Jazz Concert event. This hard bop ensemble comes out of the Jazz Messenger tradition of Art Blakey fame, in which Watson served as musical director from 1977 to 1981. This formative experience led Watson to become one of the great band leaders of our time. Watson, who has directed the UMKC Conservatory of Music since 2000, will perform with his new quartet, Live and Learn.  TICKETS: $15 for NAJS members / $20 public / $10 for students / Uof A students are free (all seats general admission).




Friday, July 31st at 8:00 PM in the Stella Boyle Smith Fine Arts Concert Hall
Trombonist Tony Baker and the Summer Jazz Rhythm Section. Considered one of the finest trombonists of his generation, Tony Baker is a faculty member at the University of  North Texas. As a soloist, Mr. Baker has established an international reputation, having performed with groups such as the Woody Herman Band and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. Tony is also a member of the Intergalactic Contemporary Orchestra and can be heard on the ensemble's latest release, I Dig, which features works by composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Les Baxter, and Henry Mancini.

Friday, August 14th at 8:00 PM in the Stella Boyle Smith Fine Arts Concert Hall 
The Composer’s Showcase features our finest regional jazz musicians and ensembles performing original compositions and arrangements in a high-energy concert. Composers' Showcase is a rare opportunity to hear and see jazz artists from our own backyard on the concert stage. The evening will feature a mixed bag of jazz styles and groups, from duos and trios to quintets and sextets. TICKETS: $10 for NAJS members / $15 public / $5 students (All seats General Admission)





Proceeds from the KUAF Summer Jazz Concerts Series support the Summer Scholarship Program offered by the NAJS and the U of A Music Department for music students wishing to further their jazz studies at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops.
