A Long Time Friend Leaves Legacy
A Long Time Friend Leaves a Legacy

Mary Parsons was a long-time friend and member of KUAF, and a devoted volunteer for KUAF's public affairs programming. Mary passed away recently. Her KUAF family remembers her fondly--for her brightness and charm and dedication to KUAF. But Mary left KUAF more than fond memories and a lifetime of support, she left a legacy. And, that legacy is a result of her generous bequest to KUAF. A portion of Mary's gift has helped KUAF establish an  endowment for an annual scholarship to a deserving journalism student at the University of Arkansas. The remainder of Mary's gift is helping KUAF build two high definition digital radio stations.

Late in her life, Mary's labor of love was the station-sponsored KUAF Writing Project, which involved hundreds of area students, in 1st through 12th grades, in writing. She served as lead volunteer during the program's six year run. Mary took pride in awarding the students prizes and recognizing them for their participation in the writing contest. She read all the short story and poetry entries, organized them by grade, and distributed them to judges. Because of Mary, this was one of the most successful outreach projects KUAF has ever undertaken.

An intrepid traveler for much of her life, one of Mary's last trips was with KUAF to Salzburg, Vienna and Prague in 2000 for the Mozart's Musical Cities tour.

The legacy Mary created, both in life and in death, lives on at KUAF.
